Support Programs :
English Support ProgramsAt Our Lady Help of Christians we provide programs to support the ongoing Literacy development of all students. Literacy support happens within the classroom setting, in small groups and one to one.
Reading Recovery: Reading Recovery Is a school based, short to medium term (10 - 20 weeks) intervention for students in their second year of schooling who need a boost in their literacy development. Data gathered at the beginning of the year identifies the students who may be eligible for participation in the Reading Recovery program. The teacher responsible for the program meets with the candidates parents/carers to explain the intervention program and the expectation of support at home. Students participate in a series of targeted individual 30 min lessons each day which supplements their ongoing classroom instruction. A specially trained teacher delivers intensive tutoring with specific procedures designed to support individuals in both reading and writing development. ERIK (Enhancing Reading Intervention Knowledge):
ERIK (Enhancing Reading Intervention Knowledge) ERIK is a small group intervention that supports children in Years 2 - 4 who are finding reading challenging. ERIK is a highly successful program and is run for five 30 minute sessions a week with a trained ERIK teacher or education support staff member. Other Literacy Interventions:
We also use Toe by Toe, MultiLit and MiniLit programs to target the development of literacy skills in an intensive way for students in Years 3 - 6. Students identified by assessment data access these programs with a trained education support staff member and participate in the program for a designated time depending upon the literacy needs of the individual child. |
Mathematics SupportThinking and working mathematically is valued at our school. Maths support is provided both within the classroom by teachers and education support staff and in small group settings. EMU - Enhancing Mathematical Understanding: is an intervention program designed to support children who need extra assistance to thrive in classroom mathematics. EMU sessions are intensive and targeted learning experiences that aim to accelerate each child's learning by developing confidence, knowledge, skills and strategies. A trained EMU specialist teacher plans and implements structured 30 minute lessons, across four days each week, with a small group of children. This additional assistance can help children to better thrive in the classroom mathematical environment and become more numerate global citizens. |
Excursions and outdoor education
Excursions, camps and other out-of-school activities enhance learning at Our Lady Help of Christians by providing our students with opportunities to learn by doing.
Through the experience of engaging, observing and reflecting on life in community situations, outside of the family and the school, students are assisted in gaining new perspectives on themselves and others. They develop a clearer understanding of their relationship with the environment, both manmade and natural. We plan for a range of excursion and incursion activities to support classroom learning/ current inquiry topics. At Our Lady Help of Christians we also offer the opportunity to engage in additional sporting activities such as clinics, round-robin competitions, and local and regional school athletics carnivals. The Outdoor Education Program also includes:
